VTB United Basketball League Council Holds a Meeting

On 12 August VTB United Basketball League Council held its meeting.

During the meeting the participants and the format of the tournament for a new season were officially announced. This year, the League includes new Basketball Clubs, in particular, Lietuvos Rytas, Prokom, Minsk 2006, Dnipro, Honka and new federations of its member-countries - Poland, Belarus and Finland.

After the meeting the League held a draw, with the participation of the celebrated basketball veterans, in particular, Alexander Volkov, President of the Basketball Federation of Ukraine and Valdis Valters, World Champion and European Champion who chose balls out of special bowls.

As a result of the draw, Group A comprised such teams as CSKA, Lietuvos Rytas (Lithuania), UNICS, Dnipro (Ukraine), Honka (Finland), and Minsk (Belarus). Group B includes Kalev (Estonia), VEF Riga (Lithuania), Prokom (Poland), Zalgiris (Lithuania), Khimki, and Azovmash (Ukraine).

VTB Bank supports two large basketball projects. Since 2008, VTB has been a general sponsor of the Russia Women’s National Basketball Team providing assistance in preparations for the Olympic Games, arrangement of the team’s matches and other events held under the aegis of the Russian Federation of Basketball. Also, in 2008, VTB launched a joint project with the Russian Federation of Basketball – a basketball tournament called “VTB United Basketball League”. Participating in the tournament are the strongest clubs of the Championship of Russia and those of the CIS and foreign countries. Among the members of the Council are: Vasily Titov, VTB First Deputy President-Chairman of the Management Board, heads of the 12 clubs participants, heads of 8 national basketball federations of member-countries, and representatives of sponsors and partners of the League.
