VTB Bank has acted as a general sponsor of the 10th International Mariinsky Ballet Festival, which is to take place in the Mariinsky Theatre on 15-25 April 2010. This unique for Russia classical dance festival of the international level is a sifnificant event of the world ballet season. It attracts to St.Petersburg balletomanes from all over the world.
This year, Anna Karenina by R. Schedrin staged by Alexei Ratmansky will open the Festival, with prima ballerina Diana Vishneva playing the star part. The ballet performance has been a European hit for many years. Initially, it was staged for the Royal Danish Ballet Company, then it was played on the leading ballet stages and received “Benois de la Danse” award.
During the Festival, the Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall will witness the world’s first ever live 3D
broadcast of the ballet. According to Gala-concert program it is planned to show fragments of legendary ballets from the Mariinsky Golden Fund performed by the world’s ballet stars, such as Ulyana Lopatkina, Viktoria Tereshkina, Igor Zelensky, Leonid Sarafanov, Anastasia and Denis Matvienko, etc. Valery Gergiev, Artistic and General Director of the Mariinsky Theatre, and Maya Plisetskaya, a prominent ballet dancer, will open the Gala-concert.
Another premier, Carmen Suite by Bizet-Schedrin staged by Albert Alonso, will be shown on 19 April. Maya Plisetskaya, the first dancer of the Carmen part, is helping to stage the performance in the Mariinsky Theatre, where Ulyana Lopatkina is to star.
Under the New Generation project, the Festival envisages three world premiers. Young modern choreographers were invited to stage three one-act ballets for the leading dancers of the Mariinsky, including Ekaterina Kondaurova, Victoria Tereshkina and Leonid Sarafanov. Edward Liang, Emil Faski and Yuri Smekalov will work with the Mariinsky soloists. The evening for the young choreographers will be held on 23 April.
On 22 April, for the first time in the Mariinsky Theatre, Lyon Opera ballet, headed by Yorgos Lukos will show a well-known Giselle staged by a prominent choreographer Mats Ek. The project is implemented within the Year of Russia-France 2010.
The Festival will also represent promising duets unifying leading soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre and recognized stars of the world’s famous ballet companies, who will play in the best performances of the Mariinsky traditional repertoire.
The 10th International Ballet Festival will be closed with a Gala-concert on 25 April. The soloists and the stars invited will take part in the concert, including David Hallberg and Daniil Simkin (the American Ballet Theatre), Alina Cojocaru (the London Royal Ballet) and others.
