On 28 February 2007, within the framework of his visit to Namibia, Andrey Kostin, Chairman and CEO of VTB, met Nahas Angula, Prime Minister of Namibia. Nikolai Gribkov, Russian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in Namibia, and Igor Maidanov, Director for international cooperation at the Russian Natural Resources Ministry, also attended the meeting.
During the meeting, which took place in the Government House of Namibia, the parties exchanged opinions on developing cooperation between Russia and Namibia, discussed a number of projects in the sphere of energy, industrial enterprises construction, mining and processing of minerals, including uranic ore. The projects are planned to be implemented with the participation of VTB subsidiary in Numibia, VTB Capital (Namibia) (Pty) Ltd., and other major companies with the cooperation of Numibian partners.
According to Andrey Kostin, the VTB international banking group is ready to invest significant financial resources in the economy of South African countries, including Namibia, to fasten the economic growth of the country on the basis of the Russian technologies. For his part, Nahas Angula assured Andrey Kostin that the Government of Namibia would maintain all Russian projects aimed at developing Namibian economy.
In addition to the existed scholarship programmes on education of Namibian students in the Russian institutes of higher education, Andrey Kostin proposed that VTB would grant a special scholarship for education of Namibian students in the Russian universities in the sphere of economy and finance. Moreover, together with the representative of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Head of VTB suggested holding a seminar in June 2007 under the auspices of VTB and MNR for the Russian and Namibian business representatives to discuss the most interesting business-projects for both countries.
At the end of the meeting Nahas Angula said that the implementation of the projects with the participation of Russia would further enhance friendly relations between the two countries that had been built in the years of Namibian struggle for independence and had become a basis for liberation of the country.
