Vneshtorgbank is continuing to finance the reconstruction of the Maximillian Voloshin house-museum

13 August 2004

In the Koktebel Republican Ecological, Historical and Cultural Reserve "M.A.Voloshin`s Cimmeria" on the memorial day of the poet, Vneshtorgbank handed over a cheque for $50,000 to the administration of the reserve to repair the house-museum and build an IT centre.

In 1923, the Koktebel home of the outstanding Russian poet, artist, translator, critic and philosopher Maximillian Aleksandrovich Voloshin, at the request of the owner, became a free-of-charge boarding house for the creative Intelligenstia.

Since then the poet`s house has been strongly associated not only with his name, but also with the names of Marina Tsvetaeva, Alexei Tolstoi, Andrey Bely, Nikolai Gumilev, Michael Prishvin, Osip Mandelshtam, Ilya Erenburg, Mikhail Bulgakov, Maxim Gorky, Alexander Green and many others. After Voloshin`s death in 1932, the house received the status of a museum.

Today, it is a cultural centre which carefully preserves the spirit of the late 19th and early 20th Century era. The house-museum is part of the Koktebel Republican Ecological, Historical and Cultural Reserve "M.A.Voloshin`s Cimmeria" .

M.A.Voloshina`s house-museum requires a major overhaul, serious work on the restoration of the basic collection of exhibits, which represent invaluable spiritual riches, and consequently additional sources of financing are very much needed.

Vneshtorgbank believes its contribution to the maintenance of the cultural traditions of the Silver Age to be very important. Over the last year the bank, as a member of the International Board of Protectors of the Koktebel Reserve, has been providing financial assistance to this monument of Russian Culture in the Crimea.
