Amidst continued warnings by NATO officials of Russia’s strengthened force at the Ukraine border, the unexpected headlines from yesterday were the almost simultaneous announcements of resignations by Head of Ukraine Security Council Andrei Parubiy and DPR Prime Minister Alexander Borodai. Otherwise, the NATO Secretary General’s visit to Kiev produced the predictable stream of statements of “effective protection of allies” and invited President Petr Poroshenko to attend the NATO summit in Wales on 4-5 September.
The resignations of the two prominent hawks on both sides of the Ukrainian conflict is the first event since the MH17 downing that can be interpreted as pointing towards at least the mild possibility of the latest wave of escalation peaking out. We will watch today’s meeting of the US Security Council (starts at 10am EST/ 6pm MT) for any further promising signs of a less combative behaviour of all parties involved in the resolution of the Ukraine crisis.
